Forest bathing and immune system: How are they connected?

Forest bathing and the immune system – yes, there is a connection. Because: forest bathing is primarily about conscious perception, about attentiveness. The spicy forest smell, the own breathing feel and the valuable, because vital atmosphere and thus far more than “only” oxygen in itself to take up. Waldbaden, called Shinrin-yoku in Japan, also strengthens the immune system. It significantly increases the number and activity of our natural killer cells, which fight viral infections such as Covid-19.

Studies show that even a short, relaxed walk through the forest has a considerable influence on our health, well-being and vitality. In the forest the number of killer cells increases and the immune system as well as self-healing powers improve, so the confirmation of the scientists. Blood pressure, cortisol and pulse would decrease – free radicals would be reduced – already after one hour in the forest.

Imitated forest air for a stronger immune system even in the big city

But of course not everyone has access to the natural forest air. Especially for people who live in big cities a daily walk in the forest is almost impossible. Also, not everyone has the time and leisure to take regular walks in the forest or is even under quarantine. But how can one bring the forest or the forest air indoors, to the office, home or to a spa hotel?

Forest bathing and immune system: strengthening through spirovitalization

Spirovital therapy is based on energizing or (re)vitalizing the immediate breathing atmosphere according to the model of photosynthesis, i.e. the natural interaction of sunlight, the chlorophyll of plants, the natural oxygen in the air and the relative humidity of the air by means of UV radiation. Guido Bierther: “Innovative spa treatment can counteract the effects of air pollution”.

Air pollution is a serious and global problem. We all know the effects: Damage to plants and crops, people and animals, forests, water, the ozone layer… and even climate change. Human activities are identified as the main cause of air pollution and it is omnipresent: in big cities and in the countryside, outdoors and inside buildings.

Effects of air pollution on our health
Poor air quality can have short and long-term effects on our health. This is especially true for children and the elderly. I myself recently suffered from a persistent laryngitis for weeks, and for almost 10 days I was unable to speak at all. Very painful and not funny. I was previously exposed to bad air for hours on a long distance flight due to air conditioning. Why is this ‘treated’ air always horrible and not enriched with beneficial ingredients? In this context, I also wonder how many spas without fresh air supply guests are exposed to such air during their stay?

Other general effects of poor air quality can include: inflammation of the eyes and nose, headaches, allergic reactions or respiratory tract infections. Long-term effects even include lung cancer, brain damage, heart problems, etc.

Forest air energy in spas?
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a therapy that could counteract the effects of air pollution in spas? A spa treatment to combat air pollution? Something like a Forest Air Energy Breathing Station?
